On the New Year’s Eve, there was no plan for me after work. Collin had to work until late night, so we made a plan to meet up. I picked him up, and we went to Gastown. We walked towards east and looked for a place to have some food and drink.

Luckily, The Flying Pig had some seat available at the bar counter. There were tons of people, wearing hat or dressing up, and it was quite noisy. TV was showing different places for New Year’s celebration.

We ordered some snack from their dinner menu, as he said he was starving.

He ordered it for me, as it was New Year’s Eve to celebrate. 🙂

Double Beefeater

I couldn’t remember what Beefeater was, so I searched and knew it was Gin. He really likes Gin! Whenever I try, I don’t know the taste.

I already had dinner earlier, so I didn’t even try this. As he likes bone marrow and also cheese, this made him happy. 😀

Seared Chili-Rubbed Skirt Steak
(Matchstick Potatoes)

I tried this skirt steak. It was good. Yet, the steak portion was small, although there were lots of potatoes.

We ordered one more thing, but it didn’t come. When we asked the bill, it was included, so we told them about it and asked to remove. It was understandable, as the restaurant was filled by lots of people for the New Year’s count down, but it would be nice if we could have tried the dish.

Anyways, it was fun to count down with all strangers in the restaurant, while TV was counting down, and to watch people screaming, blowing horn, hugging, etc. when it turned to the New Year.

Here is a night view at Gastown on New Year’s Eve.

On one of the weekends in November, Collin and I planned to have brunch. He said he wanted to eat pancake, but I didn’t want to go to the German pancake place. Instead, I was thinking where to go, while we were walking towards Gastown.

Eventually, I got an idea, The Flying Pig. I have been to the other location in Yaletown and have heard about this second location. As he hadn’t tried this restaurant, he agreed to walk in. Luckily, we were able to get seats without a reservation. There are seats upstairs as well and bar at downstairs.

We ordered from their brunch menu.

This is a bad presentation, but it’s not our fault. I took a pic before we ate, and it was served as it looks. The bread was moist, though. I believe it was banana bread.

Chef Erik’s Croque Madame

The presentation was a little bit boring, but Collin said the taste was fine. He preferred the one he had somewhere else, but I can’t remember where he referred to.

French Toast with Maple Blueberry Compote

This looks good, doesn’t it? The meal was huge! There were two slices of thick brioche, so I gave him some.

I didn’t know how my French toast looked like and wanted to have some vitamin C, because I had been sick on and off, so I ordered this side dish. There were strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, pineapple, and melon. It was quite a quantity as a side, and I also asked him to have some.

We were satisfied with both their service and food. We would come back in the next occasion.

Here is a view from the upstairs in the restaurant.

I hadn’t seen one of my friends for two months or so, and she asked me if we can eat out for dinner before she got busier at her work. It was just before the ski season started, so I agreed and picked a date and a restaurant.

I chose The Flying Pig in Yaletown, which was long in my list. 🙂 They don’t take a reservation for dinner, so we just walked in. It was Saturday night, so we had to wait for 45 min, as anticipated.

As a start, there was a bit annoying incident happening to us. It was a cold night, so we waited inside. The host kept asking if there was anything that they can help, even after we left our name and phone number. He even allowed letting some people coming after us in and be seated at the window-side counter for waiting, which he didn’t offer us. Finally, we asked if we can wait here inside the door, and he said no… I just didn’t want to leave, because I read a review on some site saying that they never called back, but what can we do? No choice and we left and wandered around the area, and we decided if there were any other interesting restaurant we just went there. Well, as a note, they called us eventually before we found the other place.

We ordered from their dinner menu.

Our server was nice, and food was good. As they accept reservations for brunch, I may go for it.
