One day in May, Collin and I had a bad day. I just couldn’t stay home, so I left for walking and had a cup of tea at a coffee shop. As it was getting dark and late, I decided to have dinner out or to get something to go.

I went to Hyoga Japanese Cuisine on Kingsway. At my last two visits, I didn’t have much Sushi, so my choice was Sushi. They serve Japanese tapas like Izakaya dishes, too.

I ordered from their regular menu.

Nigiri Sushi
(Left to down: Red Tuna, Hamachi, Ebi, Tamago, Right to down: Toro, Ikura, Amaebi)

These are my choices, not assorted by them. Sushi was good! They deep-fried Amaebi’s head for me, which was great!

For my birthday night, I chose this restaurant, because I saw the Klip magazine that they would provide a complimentary food for your birthday. I called them a few days prior to my birthday and asked how it works. They will provide the service on or one day before or after your birthday by showing your ID.

Octopus’ Garden is a Japanese restaurant in Kitsilano. It is close to Kitsilano Beach. I talked to the owner and they have been really long time for this business. He is a funny person so that even though I went there alone, he entertained me a lot.

As I showed my ID, they prepared for the complimentary Chirashi Sushi Box. I felt bad about not paying anything, so I asked the owner if I can order something that I can eat with Chirashi (portion-wise). He asked about Wagyu (Japanese beef) Nigiri, so I ordered them.

Here is a cute chopstick rest that shapes like an octopus.

There were a lot of kinds of seafood in it, such as red Tuna, Albacore tuna, mackerel, bonito, squid, salmon, salmon roe, yellowtail, etc.

The owner showed me a hunk of Wagyu, and he also explained how well cows were raised so that the beef was expensive and showed me its certification. This is Noda Beef.

Mmmm. So good! Melting in my mouth! I really thought I could die on that day. 😀 He said he would make two Nigiri, but he gave me three! It was very nice of him.

And, a gummy shaped like an octopus came with the bill.

Oh, I’d love to go back on special occasion for that Wagyu! 🙂

My company usually does a Christmas party at one of my boss’ house, but this time she took a vacation early and longer before Christmas, so we had one at the restaurant. There is one co-worker who cannot take wheat and also the other who has allergy with shellfish. It was not easy to make a decision for where to go.

Minami has Omakase (prix fixe) course and they can accommodate with the special diet. The server came before we started to get served, and she asked how severe the diet would be. (Do you know some soy sauce even contains gluten?)

Minami Restaurant is located in Yaletown. Most of our members came from far by cars, and it seemed not to easy to find a parking spot.

Collin and I came here before and liked Yuzu alcohol, so we recommended to everyone, but one of my boss didn’t see the pricing until he paid, and he was so surprised how expensive it was and how much we drank. :p

After eating short rib, I was getting full. The last main was Sushi, so I was so stuffed after!

I enjoyed their food, but I realized something after I was talking to my boss. The restaurant is too dark to enjoy food by eyes. I’m glad that I had installed Flashlight app on my iPhone so that I could enjoy before starting eating. (Flashlight app was useful to take a picture by my digital camera, too!)
