There was a day in September that I would like to celebrate for myself. It has been a certain number of years since I moved in Canada, which I couldn’t believe how fast the time passed, and I felt I was deserved to treat myself well.

I asked Collin to come with me for dinner. For this special occasion, I chose West Restaurant. They are located at South Granville, a couple blocks away from Broadway. They serve contemporary regional cuisine. (It seems to mean modern and local, according to Collin.)

They have three kinds of tasting menu (7 courses); Sea Tasting, Land Tasting, and Vegetarian Tasting, and Collin chose Lane and I chose Sea.

I believe it was smoked salmon with pickled Daikon or celeriac. It was refreshment to start with. I should have taken a picture using flashlight…

I liked both first dishes. For salmon, I wish there was more salmon. :p Both of them are still on the current menu, so we can order next time.

This octopus Chorizo was remarkable to us. The Tuna was nothing special.

This was beautifully plated. Not only that, Collin admired how well the quail was cooked. He said it was perfect.

This was also beautifully plated. The scallop was cooked perfectly as well. I wanted to eat another one!

Duck was fine, but the sauce was rich and we felt it was a bit too much. The corn helped for the refreshment.

The skin on the ling cod was crispy. I wanted to have little bit of punch on seasoning.

I think this was berry sorbet with peach compote. It was a great refreshment after eating three dishes.

This was a good dessert. We both liked, especially the mint frozen yogurt.

For the Sea Tasting, this dessert was the most heavy dish. 😀 I was wondering how squash works in dessert, but it was good.

Overall, we both thought the Land tasting menu was better and worth trying than the Sea. The meat plates were so filling and you can bite repeatedly and taste well, whereas the seafood plates were small portions so that the ordinary person like me can’t remember what the detail taste was or even if it was something special, just having two bites. Maybe, I’m not high standard to try these restaurants yet. 😀
