There was a day in September that I would like to celebrate for myself. It has been a certain number of years since I moved in Canada, which I couldn’t believe how fast the time passed, and I felt I was deserved to treat myself well.

I asked Collin to come with me for dinner. For this special occasion, I chose West Restaurant. They are located at South Granville, a couple blocks away from Broadway. They serve contemporary regional cuisine. (It seems to mean modern and local, according to Collin.)

They have three kinds of tasting menu (7 courses); Sea Tasting, Land Tasting, and Vegetarian Tasting, and Collin chose Lane and I chose Sea.

I don’t remember what kind of bread they were. There were 3 kinds.

Beldi

First dish, Amuse Bouche

I believe it was smoked salmon with pickled Daikon or celeriac. It was refreshment to start with. I should have taken a picture using flashlight…

Second dish for Land, Beef Tartar
(Sweet Onion and Soy, Sesame, Shallot)

You see the pink one at the bottom. That was tartar.

Second dish for Sea, Wild BC Salmon
(Spice Cured, Baby Dill, Cucumbers)

You see the thin sliced orange one at the bottom. That was salmon.

I liked both first dishes. For salmon, I wish there was more salmon. :p Both of them are still on the current menu, so we can order next time.

Third dish for Land, Twice Cooked Foie Gras
(Toasted Agassiz Hazelnuts, Green Strawberries, Brioche)

Third dish for Sea, Albacore Tuna
(Octopus Chorizo, Black Olives, EVOO)

This octopus Chorizo was remarkable to us. The Tuna was nothing special.

Fourth dish for Land, Thiessen Farm Quail
(Espelette Glazed, Potato and Herb Rosti, Chevre)

This was beautifully plated. Not only that, Collin admired how well the quail was cooked. He said it was perfect.

Fourth dish for Sea, Diver Caught Scallop
(Snap Peas, Carrots, Sauce Vierge)

This was also beautifully plated. The scallop was cooked perfectly as well. I wanted to eat another one!

Fifth dish for Land, Yarrow Meadows Duck
(Confit Leg, Chanterelles, Corn, Plum Compote)

Duck was fine, but the sauce was rich and we felt it was a bit too much. The corn helped for the refreshment.

Fifth dish for Sea, Line Caught Ling Cod
(Gailan, Shimeji Mushrooms, Ponzu)

The skin on the ling cod was crispy. I wanted to have little bit of punch on seasoning.

Sixth dish, Pre Dessert

I think this was berry sorbet with peach compote. It was a great refreshment after eating three dishes.

Seventh dish for Land, Strawberry Lemon Cream Tart
(Fresh Strawberries, Mint Frozen Yogurt)

This was a good dessert. We both liked, especially the mint frozen yogurt.

Seventh dish for Sea, Spiced Squash Cheesecake
(Banana, Ganache, Orange Squash Sobert)

For the Sea Tasting, this dessert was the most heavy dish. 😀 I was wondering how squash works in dessert, but it was good.

Petit Four
(Chocolate Truffles)

While I went to washroom, this was served, and Collin had his share already before I came back.

And, an extra picture of the restaurant interior.

Overall, we both thought the Land tasting menu was better and worth trying than the Sea. The meat plates were so filling and you can bite repeatedly and taste well, whereas the seafood plates were small portions so that the ordinary person like me can’t remember what the detail taste was or even if it was something special, just having two bites. Maybe, I’m not high standard to try these restaurants yet. 😀

So, I mentioned a couple of times in the previous posts that my friend’s birthday was coming up. I picked some restaurants for the dinner, and the birthday girl chose one, which was Siena. When I called them and asked if we can bring some cake with us, a lady, who answered the phone, said not allowed due to the health/sanitary concern. I understood their point of view. While I was discussing with my friends what we wanted to do, either change the restaurant, or no cake to bring but order at the restaurant or go somewhere else for dessert, I got a returning call from the lady, saying we can bring cake but they will charge $2.50 per person. Anyways, I made a reservation online at the end. 😀

Siena Restaurant is at lively South Granville, a couple blocks away from Broadway. They are a casual Italian restaurant where can serve maybe 40 people.

We were a group of five, and two boys decided to go for Prix Fixe, three course meal, and the rest of us, girls went for antipasti to share and ordered each entree.

Antipasti (for two)
(Asparagus Salad, Smoked Salmon, Olives, Salmon Mousse, Sopresetta, Orzo Salad, Roasted Garlic, Focaccia, Lentil-Pepper Salad)

This antipasti was enough to share with three people. We even offered to the others, who ordered Prix Fixe, to have some. I, personally, liked asparagus salad and salmon mousse. As we shared with everybody, we asked extra focaccia.

Focaccia

Linguine con Vongole
(Clams steamed in White Wine, Garlic and Olive Oil)

The birthday girl was so happy to have this. Actually, the reason why she decided to go to this restaurant was the picture of vongole on their website! 🙂 And, you know what? It tasted great!

Spaghettini alla Puttanesca
(Tomato, Chili, Garlic, Anchovies, Olives, Capers)

Spaghettini alla Puttanesca at Siena Restaurant in Vancouver

The other girl friend went for this, and she said it was salty. I tasted, and I thought the saltiness came from olives.

Seared Scallops on Pesto Risotto
(Qualicum Bay Scallops, Oven-dried Tomatoes)

This was what I ordered. The first bite of the risotto made me think. The second bite made me ask my friends to try. For the third bite, I asked salt, because it was so bland. Although the server brought salt, the owner or manager came and offered to make a new one. The scallop was perfect, though. Yes, the risotto was fine at the second time.

Entree from Prix Fixe, Grilled Flat Iron Steak
(Salsa Verde, Roasted Fingerlings, Arugula, Parmesan)

Collin ordered this one. He said it would have been better if arugula didn’t hide steak.

Entree from Prix Fixe, Braised Lamb Ravioli
(Citrus Gremolata, Brown Butter, Pecorino)

The other boy friend ordered and loved this one. Yet, he wished there were more ravioli in the plate. 🙂

Dessert from Prix Fixe, Vanilla Gelato with Balsamic Fig Syrup
(Almond Thyme Biscotti)

Dessert from Prix Fixe, Chocolate Hazel Torte

And, the birthday girl received a glass of complimentary sherry (?) from the restaurant.

I won’t reveal where those are from now. (Well, you must have known!) Look forward the next post.

Anyways, even though we were five of us, they didn’t charge the fee $2.50 per person for five, maybe because two of us ordered their dessert with Prix Fixe.

As the first eat-out this year, Collin chose this restaurant to celebrate. I agreed, as we really liked their food at the last visit when his birthday. They have prix fixe brunch for $29 and change the menu occasionally, so you can enjoy a seasonal 3-course meal at a reasonable price. It would be great for first-time customers to try them out.

Market by Jean-Georges is on 3rd floor of Shangri-La Hotel, which is the highest building in BC and is located in the centre of downtown Vancouver. If you have a problem with stairs, find the elevator beside Urban Fare market.

We ordered from their prix fixe brunch menu.

When an expediter brought my dish, she said Sushi, and I told her that I didn’t order Sushi. She restated Sashimi after that. Come to think of it, why didn’t they say Sushi on the menu? 🙂

His entree, French Toast with Roasted Apples and Crispy Bacon

After Collin started eating his main, he realized that he had enough sweets and that the dessert was still coming, so he asked the server to pack the half. I warned him after we ordered, but it was too late. I should have done that before we ordered.

The caramel was hard because of ice cream? It could have been more enjoyable if caramel was on top of pear or on the side.

Compared to the last menu, this menu was OK. Don’t get me wrong, taste was good. I just liked the last menu more. In this menu, I liked my appy best.
