For Collin’s birthday celebration, his family invited us for dinner. The restaurant they chose was Siena.

Siena Restaurant is a casual Italian restaurant, located in South Granville. Only a couple blocks away from Broadway. The restaurant was filled by a lot of people before 8pm when we arrived.

We ordered some appetizers to share, and we each ordered an entree.

Antipasti Selection (for two)
(Prosciutto, Sopressata, Mortadella, Polenta Frites, Roasted Garlic, Beets, Walnuts, Farro Salad, Roasted Squash, Olives, Grilled Focaccia)

Both appy came quickly, which was great. I liked both. I had polenta frites first time, and it was very interesting. I would try them again.

Today’s Salad
(Burrata, Soprasetta, Pear, Shallots, Mixed Greens, Raspberry Vin)

The salad came out way later than the previous appetizers. Both Collin and I like burrata cheese, so we liked this salad.

Now the time for the entree. It took over one hour after the first two appetizers came! We were wondering at some point if the entrees would ever come or not.

Fish of the Day
(Pan seared Arctic Char, Fingerlings, Green Beans, Leek Cream)

Today’s Pasta

Grilled Flat Iron Steak
(Balsamic-basil marinade, Caramelized Onion, Polenta)

Collin had this dish before, but the ingredients were changed, although the dish name was same. He enjoyed, which was a good thing.

Chorizo and Squid Linguine
(Olive Oil, Garlic, Roasted Pepper Puree)

I and the other family member chose this one. I could tell mine was hot, as I saw the steam coming out of the plate, but hers, however, seemed cold and let the server know. She had to wait for her dish for more time, in addition to one hour of waiting…
It tasted so good, though.

Over previous and this visits, my impression is that their food quality control is inconsistent. When the dish was sent back, the reheated dish tasted good, so they could do better all time.

So, I mentioned a couple of times in the previous posts that my friend’s birthday was coming up. I picked some restaurants for the dinner, and the birthday girl chose one, which was Siena. When I called them and asked if we can bring some cake with us, a lady, who answered the phone, said not allowed due to the health/sanitary concern. I understood their point of view. While I was discussing with my friends what we wanted to do, either change the restaurant, or no cake to bring but order at the restaurant or go somewhere else for dessert, I got a returning call from the lady, saying we can bring cake but they will charge $2.50 per person. Anyways, I made a reservation online at the end. ๐Ÿ˜€

Siena Restaurant is at lively South Granville, a couple blocks away from Broadway. They are a casual Italian restaurant where can serve maybe 40 people.

We were a group of five, and two boys decided to go for Prix Fixe, three course meal, and the rest of us, girls went for antipasti to share and ordered each entree.

Antipasti (for two)
(Asparagus Salad, Smoked Salmon, Olives, Salmon Mousse, Sopresetta, Orzo Salad, Roasted Garlic, Focaccia, Lentil-Pepper Salad)

This antipasti was enough to share with three people. We even offered to the others, who ordered Prix Fixe, to have some. I, personally, liked asparagus salad and salmon mousse. As we shared with everybody, we asked extra focaccia.

Linguine con Vongole
(Clams steamed in White Wine, Garlic and Olive Oil)

The birthday girl was so happy to have this. Actually, the reason why she decided to go to this restaurant was the picture of vongole on their website! ๐Ÿ™‚ And, you know what? It tasted great!

Spaghettini alla Puttanesca
(Tomato, Chili, Garlic, Anchovies, Olives, Capers)

The other girl friend went for this, and she said it was salty. I tasted, and I thought the saltiness came from olives.

Seared Scallops on Pesto Risotto
(Qualicum Bay Scallops, Oven-dried Tomatoes)

This was what I ordered. The first bite of the risotto made me think. The second bite made me ask my friends to try. For the third bite, I asked salt, because it was so bland. Although the server brought salt, the owner or manager came and offered to make a new one. The scallop was perfect, though. Yes, the risotto was fine at the second time.

Entree from Prix Fixe, Grilled Flat Iron Steak
(Salsa Verde, Roasted Fingerlings, Arugula, Parmesan)

Collin ordered this one. He said it would have been better if arugula didn’t hide steak.

Entree from Prix Fixe, Braised Lamb Ravioli
(Citrus Gremolata, Brown Butter, Pecorino)

The other boy friend ordered and loved this one. Yet, he wished there were more ravioli in the plate. ๐Ÿ™‚

And, the birthday girl received a glass of complimentary sherry (?) from the restaurant.

I won’t reveal where those are from now. (Well, you must have known!) Look forward the next post.

Anyways, even though we were five of us, they didn’t charge the fee $2.50 per person for five, maybe because two of us ordered their dessert with Prix Fixe.

There was one friend whom I hadn’t seen over a year. She said she finally feels better and eats better, and she can go out, so we planned a date back in June for brunch. It used to be she was the one who always would catch new restaurants’ info, but since her info was out-dated, I needed to find a place.

I read a blog about this place, Incendio Pizzeria, saying calzone tasted good and pizza still tasted great even after it got cold. So, I chose this restaurant. Their interior looks like a bar, but they serve lunch and brunch, too. It is located in Gastown area.

We ordered from their brunch menu.

Breakfast Calzone
(Tomato Sauce, Ricotta Cheese, Chorizo Sausage, House Potatoes, Mozzarella, on Egg)

Calzone was huge! Even I couldn’t finish. ๐Ÿ™‚ I took half home. You would need to allow 20 min or so to make this. Both pizza and calzone tasted so good. I will definitely go back there.

And, an extra picture of the restaurant interior.
