My birthday is in December, and as it was on his day off, he planned making 10-course birthday dinner for me. While I was working, he went shopping for those ingredients.

The course was served as tapas style first and then two mains and two dessert!

1st course: Smoked Ham, Pear, and Goat Brie Crostini

2nd course: Broccoli Soup with Goat Brie

The last time he made was much better, I mean, this was a bit watery.

3rd course: Swiss Chard Sausage, Yam, Dijon Gravy

This was interesting dish and delicious! I would order again! 😀

4th course: Bruschetta with Arugula & Tomatoes (for two)

5th course: Marinated Eggplant & Salmon

Marinated Eggplant & Salmon

This was my least favorite. I loved the marinated eggplant as usual, but salmon was lukewarm, which he said it was intentional but it was weird to me.

6th course: Lamb Chop, pan-seared Root Vegetables, Swiss Chard, Dijon red wine sauce

The lamb chop was beautifully cooked. We shared it, which is good, because I was getting full at this point.

7th course: Salmon, Crab Mashed Potatoes, and Turnip Hash

The salmon was nicely cooked, too. The crab mash was a bit softer than the one he made before, so that it lost the texture. I really liked the turnip hash.

8th course: Spaghetti Carbonara with Prawns and Scallop

At this point, I was too full. I wished I can share, but he made this full size for himself as well. The taste was good, though.

9th course: Chocolate Panna Cotta

I was too full to have two dessert, so he arranged this dessert, using both ingredients. Panna Cotta was a little loose, so it was like mousse.

This would be the last birthday dinner cooked by him, as he said he rather buy gifts next time. 🙂

My friend gave a birth in July, and she didn’t seem to have left home much since then, although her parents helped her. So, I sent a message if she would go for brunch with me, including her baby and parents. She replied she would like to come but only herself. Okay, then I asked her if there was any place she wanted to go. Nothing in her mind, so I suggested afternoon tea.

Next morning, I called Secret Garden Tea Company, which seems really a nice relaxing tea place in Arbutus/Kerrisdale area. As the machine answered, I left a message for a reservation for that noon. I wasn’t sure if they called back only if they had spaces available or not. I wanted to call another place if this place was not available, so I called again in 30 min and booked successfully for afternoon tea for that day.

Before start, some sample tea was served. I can’t remember what it was, though.

There were many kinds of earl grey tea. I chose lavender earl grey.

The top tier came with dessert, the middle tier came with snacks, and the bottom tier came with savory food. We started to eat from bottom to top.

As savory food, three kinds of mini sandwiches were served. Roasted turkey, cranberry relish, mayo, crisp lettuce on mini croissant, shrimp salad with celery, red peppers, dill, mayo on mini biscuit, and egg salad with mayo, green onions on multi grain bread. We loved them all! Everything looks like on their lunch menu, so I would like to eat here next time.

As snacks, tea cake and mini scones were served with jam and Devon cream. The tea cake was carrot cake, and some raisin was in the scone.

As dessert, three kinds of sweet were served. Lemon tart, orange mousse sponge cake, and white chocolate cardamon Panna cotta. By the time we were having these dessert, cream was melted down and Panna cotta was warm, which was a bit disappointing. We were seated at the end of the room, and the sunshine was coming in through skylight, which must have made the area hot.

They have various afternoon tea courses. You can choose based on how hungry you are. But a reservation is definitely recommended.

And, extra pictures for tea section in the cafe.

As I mentioned, we had a birthday dinner for our friend. As the traditional event, we usually buy birthday cake and bring to the restaurant where we eat. The dinner date was a weekday, and everybody worked on that day, so I asked Collin to pick up some dessert from a bakery cafe.

French Made Baking is the one I chose, which I checked out at Farmer’s Market. The cafe is on Kingsway, close to Broadway. When he got there, he called me there were not many choices. Those were what he chose, and I can’t remember those exact name and what it was.

What I liked most was Panna Cotta. The tart was good, too. The flan was much firmer than I imagined.

I want to visit there one day and eat crepe! 🙂
