For the first weekend brunch this year, we tried a famous brunch place. As we expected, there were a few people waiting. As Collin had to go to work soon later, we looked for another place. While we were walking towards Robson and Burrard, I asked him if this restaurant was OK.

Earls is a chain restaurant in Canada and some places in USA. As far as I know, they used to serve all western food, but it has been changed time to time, and now you can even see Sushi in the menu. The restaurant is in multiple locations, and the place where we went is located at the corner of Hornby and Smithe Street.

We ordered from their brunch menu.

Croque Madame
(Virginia Ham, White Cheddar, Roasted Serrano Cream, House Sourdough)

He asked the server the sauce on side for me, because he said it would be spicy, based on the description of the sauce. It was nice of him.

Whoa, I just saw what I didn’t want to see. I looked at their nutritional info on their site, and this croque madame is over 1,300 calories! Yet, it was sooo good! I liked the bread, crispy crust and soft inside.

The sandwich board outside showed French toast, which looks good. I would try that next time.

On the New Year’s Eve, there was no plan for me after work. Collin had to work until late night, so we made a plan to meet up. I picked him up, and we went to Gastown. We walked towards east and looked for a place to have some food and drink.

Luckily, The Flying Pig had some seat available at the bar counter. There were tons of people, wearing hat or dressing up, and it was quite noisy. TV was showing different places for New Year’s celebration.

We ordered some snack from their dinner menu, as he said he was starving.

A Glass of Prosecco

He ordered it for me, as it was New Year’s Eve to celebrate. 🙂

Double Beefeater

I couldn’t remember what Beefeater was, so I searched and knew it was Gin. He really likes Gin! Whenever I try, I don’t know the taste.

Bone Marrow Cheezy Bread

I already had dinner earlier, so I didn’t even try this. As he likes bone marrow and also cheese, this made him happy. 😀

Seared Chili-Rubbed Skirt Steak
(Matchstick Potatoes)

I tried this skirt steak. It was good. Yet, the steak portion was small, although there were lots of potatoes.

We ordered one more thing, but it didn’t come. When we asked the bill, it was included, so we told them about it and asked to remove. It was understandable, as the restaurant was filled by lots of people for the New Year’s count down, but it would be nice if we could have tried the dish.

Anyways, it was fun to count down with all strangers in the restaurant, while TV was counting down, and to watch people screaming, blowing horn, hugging, etc. when it turned to the New Year.

Here is a night view at Gastown on New Year’s Eve.

Just before the Christmas time last year, I got contacted by my friend whom I went to the same school with. I hadn’t seen her for a year, so yes, I was definitely looking forward seeing her. She also invited our common friend. I didn’t even remember when was the last time I saw the friend.

We got together at a cafe in downtown Vancouver first, because one other friend joined us. After he left, three of us decided to have dinner. As my friend needed to go to Metrotown for errands, we headed to Burnaby. The shopping at mall in the Christmas time was crazy, but finding a parking spot was crazier! Anyways, by the time when we finished the errands, it was getting late. We didn’t know where to go for dinner, so I took them to Pearl House, a Taiwanese restaurant.

We ordered from their menu to share. My friends didn’t know what to order except beef noodles, so I suggested the dishes from my previous visit. Unfortunately, beef sirloin was sold out…

Instead of beef sirloin, we took advice from the server and ordered beef tendon one. Well, none of us liked the tendon. Nothing wrong. We were just not familiar with the texture. It was probably my first try, and now I know I wouldn’t order the tendon next time anywhere. 😀

Shredded Chicken with Green Onion & Ginger Sauce

This was my other friends’ recommendation in my previous visit, Dong-an Ji (stir-fried chicken). It is spicy, but it tastes so good.

Tofu & Minced Pork in Spicy Sauce on Rice

When I told my friends there was Mapo Tofu, they responded right away that they wanted to eat! 😀 And, I’m glad they liked it.

If I go to the restaurant again, I want to order something else. Any suggestions?
