So, I mentioned a couple of times in the previous posts that my friend’s birthday was coming up. I picked some restaurants for the dinner, and the birthday girl chose one, which was Siena. When I called them and asked if we can bring some cake with us, a lady, who answered the phone, said not allowed due to the health/sanitary concern. I understood their point of view. While I was discussing with my friends what we wanted to do, either change the restaurant, or no cake to bring but order at the restaurant or go somewhere else for dessert, I got a returning call from the lady, saying we can bring cake but they will charge $2.50 per person. Anyways, I made a reservation online at the end. 😀

Siena Restaurant is at lively South Granville, a couple blocks away from Broadway. They are a casual Italian restaurant where can serve maybe 40 people.

We were a group of five, and two boys decided to go for Prix Fixe, three course meal, and the rest of us, girls went for antipasti to share and ordered each entree.

Antipasti (for two)
(Asparagus Salad, Smoked Salmon, Olives, Salmon Mousse, Sopresetta, Orzo Salad, Roasted Garlic, Focaccia, Lentil-Pepper Salad)

This antipasti was enough to share with three people. We even offered to the others, who ordered Prix Fixe, to have some. I, personally, liked asparagus salad and salmon mousse. As we shared with everybody, we asked extra focaccia.

Linguine con Vongole
(Clams steamed in White Wine, Garlic and Olive Oil)

The birthday girl was so happy to have this. Actually, the reason why she decided to go to this restaurant was the picture of vongole on their website! 🙂 And, you know what? It tasted great!

Spaghettini alla Puttanesca
(Tomato, Chili, Garlic, Anchovies, Olives, Capers)

The other girl friend went for this, and she said it was salty. I tasted, and I thought the saltiness came from olives.

Seared Scallops on Pesto Risotto
(Qualicum Bay Scallops, Oven-dried Tomatoes)

This was what I ordered. The first bite of the risotto made me think. The second bite made me ask my friends to try. For the third bite, I asked salt, because it was so bland. Although the server brought salt, the owner or manager came and offered to make a new one. The scallop was perfect, though. Yes, the risotto was fine at the second time.

Entree from Prix Fixe, Grilled Flat Iron Steak
(Salsa Verde, Roasted Fingerlings, Arugula, Parmesan)

Collin ordered this one. He said it would have been better if arugula didn’t hide steak.

Entree from Prix Fixe, Braised Lamb Ravioli
(Citrus Gremolata, Brown Butter, Pecorino)

The other boy friend ordered and loved this one. Yet, he wished there were more ravioli in the plate. 🙂

Dessert from Prix Fixe, Chocolate Hazel Torte

And, the birthday girl received a glass of complimentary sherry (?) from the restaurant.

I won’t reveal where those are from now. (Well, you must have known!) Look forward the next post.

Anyways, even though we were five of us, they didn’t charge the fee $2.50 per person for five, maybe because two of us ordered their dessert with Prix Fixe.

One day, my friend told me that she had afternoon tea tickets that she had bought at Dealfind deal last year. She was going to go with her family but couldn’t have arranged, and the tickets were going to expire soon. So, she invited me and Collin, and our other friend. Originally, the tickets were not valid on Sundays, but because of too many reservations, the hotel accepted Saturdays, too.

Afternoon tea was served at 900 West Lounge at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. When you go into the hotel, you see the lounge in the centre of the hotel. The entrance for Afternoon tea, though, is at the end of the lounge, close to the taxi loop. At the front lounge, you can eat lunch or dinner, listening Jazz music.

I chose Fairmont Earl Grey from Sri Lanka. The others chose Versailles Lavender Earl Grey from France and Ice Wine from Sri Lanka.

We were a group of four, so two towers came.

Top Layer
(Fresh Baked Butter & Raisin Scones, Devonshire Clotted Cream, Homemade Fruit Preserves)

The scones were warm, and moist and soft. One of my friend even said that she wanted to buy some if they sell. I agree. Their scones were nicely baked, and the cream tasted good.

Middle Layer
(Sweet Pastries: Raspberry Tarlets, Opera Torte, Charred Lemon Curd, Chocolate Mocha Choux, Macaroons)

I was too full to eat these sweets after having scones and sandwiches, so I brought the most of them to home. Even on the next day, they tasted fine.

Bottom Layer
(Tea Sandwiches: Roasted Turkey, Brie, Cranberry Relish, Saffron Pecan Baguette (yellow one), Organic Egg Salad, Cucumber Ribbons (cucumber one), Smoked Salmon, Lemon Mascarpone Pinwheel (brown one), Heirloom Tomato, Crisp Pancetta, Rosemary Focaccia)

For the sandwiches, we all had separate opinions. Some liked salmon, some liked focaccia, etc. To me, they were OK. Some of the bread were dry, which is understandable but a bit disappointing part.

Well, we all enjoyed tea and the food as well as time spent with friends. 🙂

So, as I mentioned in the previous post, my friend and I stayed at the coffee shop for 3 hours after 13km of walking. When we realized that long time being passed, it was about 9:00pm! I suggested we should have some bites somewhere, and we kept walking on Denman street, until we found a place where was still open at Sunday night.

I had an idea that Kingyo Izakaya would be open, but you never know! I’m glad that the restaurant is open till late. It is a good place to have some bites.

We ordered from their dinner and special menu.

Fresh Sashimi Salad
(Three kinds of Sashimi (changes daily) on a bed of organic greens dressed with a soy based vinaigrette and garlic oil)

A kitchen staff member showed up in the front and talked to someone. And, my friend noticed that she knew the staff, and they greeted each other. We talked about the served food a bit. After that, he brought some bread that he had just made as well as Salt Caramel Tiramisu (I think).
