After the busy work storm was left, there was a quiet weekday. I was texting with my friend after work, and we ended up going for dinner. It was Friday and I had been busy, so she suggested somewhere close to both of us.

She had an idea, which was Hyoga Japanese Cuisine, on Kingsway, close to Joyce Street. They serve Sushi, tapas, as well as some of combo menu. The restaurant is really small, and it doesn’t have noisy Izakaya atmosphere, but it is casual and comfortable to eat there. There are lunch dishes on their menu, so I asked we can order. The server said you can order but pricing will be added $1.50.

We ordered from their regular and special menu.

The creamy Yuzu sauce was interesting, and my friend really liked the sauce.

Nasu Dengaku

Nasu is eggplant, and Dengaku is sweetened Miso grazed. I liked this dish!

Korroke and Fried Fish Set
(1pc of Panko Crusted Aji (striped mackerel), and 2pcs each of Pacific Cod, Creamy Corn Croquette with Tonkatsu Sauce, Salad, Rice, Miso Soup)

We both enjoyed fried Aji. I generally like cream corn croquette, but I don’t know if they actually made by hand. (Sorry…) I preferred one from Fujiya.

Pork Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savory pancake. This one was quite soft than I usually make at home.

They serve a lot of Sushi, so I might want to order some next time.

I bought some beets at Farmer’s Market, so I asked Collin to make something with them. (Haha, I never cook beets before.) I also asked to use potatoes that we still have bunch. He said he would make mashed potatoes, so I requested to add yam potatoes.

Pan seared Sirloin with Roasted Beet and Eggplant Salad, Marinated Tomato, and Sweet Potato Puree

Oh, beets were fantastic! So were eggplants. Mashed potatoes with yam (that he claimed sweet potato) was yum, too. The only problem was that the dish was huge. 😛

I had a craving for non-greasy fried rice for a while like I had in Japan. Fried rice to me should be non-greasy and non-stick too much, yet still easy to pick up even the last grains of rice by spoon. What I experienced in Canada so far isn’t satisfying my needs.

So, Kirin Restaurant came to my mind if their food was good. The only thing that I worried was if I can order to go. And, they said YES! Can you believe that? As I was embarrassed to eat there alone, especially at the fine dining, I appreciated it. Anyways, I waited for 20 min for food ready.

I ordered from their a la carte menu.

Although food was tasty, I think I should have eaten at the restaurant and the food would be great hot. As the receptionist said a few people come there alone, especially lunch time, I would love to go and eat there even alone. I want to try dim sum, too!
