In the middle of June, I went hiking with my friends. As they live in downtown Vancouver, we decided to have lunch somewhere in downtown after that. They gave two choices, Mexican or Japanese. I didn’t feel like eating Mexican, so we went to a Japanese restaurant.

It was Guu Garden. They are located at the corner of Hornby and Nelson street and serve Izakaya menu, i.e., tapas, at night. At the lunch time, they serve Teishoku, combo, or Bento box, in addition to some small dishes.

We ordered from their lunch menu and today’s special.

My choice, Black Cod Combo
(Grilled Saikyo Miso black Cod Combo)

It was good. Nothing special, though. :p

Friend’s choice, Tuna Yukke Don
(Chopped Tuna “Yukke” on rice with half boiled Egg & Ground Sticky Potato)

My friend, who ordered Yukke Don, had ordered it before, too. So, it must be good.

My company had a meeting with 3rd party in downtown in Vancouver on a weekday, and I headed there, too. The meeting took 3 hours, and then a thing happened, my co-worker lost his phone. He was chasing the GPS signal on the other’s phone to locate his phone, but no luck. Anyways, we waited for another hour, so it was already past 2 o’clock!

My boss and I were thinking where to go for lunch. It is so difficult to find a place when one can’t take gluten and another one is allergic to shrimp. And, the time may be late for lunch. Well, we decided to go to Kingyo Izakaya, since they open til late. Kingyo Izakaya is on Denman street between Robson and Davie streets.

We ordered from their regular lunch menu. There was one more different dish, but I missed the chance to take a picture.

Vegetarian Stone Bowl Donburi Combo
(Inari Age (Deep-fried Bean Curd) , Walnuts, Avocado, Takana Pickled on the rice in the sizzling stone bowl, served with green salad, pickles & vegetarian Miso soup)

My choice, Chef’s Choice Grilled Daily 2 Kinds Fish Combo
(Today’s fish: Horse Mackerel and Salmon)

I was thinking to order a different one, but I ordered this again. This time, 2 kinds fish were horse mackerel (Aji) and salmon. The small plate on the left was tofu with garlic oil, but it wasn’t spicy or anything, and it was just oily, and I and some others didn’t like it. Anyways, I was too full afterwards.

Just before Easter weekend, I had a craving for curry. Collin had a night off on that day, and he wanted to eat Ebi Ten plate. So, I headed to downtown Vancouver. Although I went there and they had curry as well, I just ordered his dinner, because this new place was in my mind to try.

ZAC-ZAC Japanese Curry House is a small fast food restaurant in the food court at H-Mart. They are specializing in Japanese curry. I can’t really described the difference from the other kinds, but it has lots of veggies and gluten. If you’re interested, you can read this. The restaurant expanded their menu to Donburi and Bento box, too.

I ordered from their curry menu to go.

They asked if I like mild or regular for spiciness. I couldn’t decide and asked how spicy it was, compared to the manufactured curry package. When I make Japanese curry at home, I use medium hot curry package. Having said that, they recommended the regular one.

I liked their curry, which the spiciness comes back in your month a little later. Katsu (cutlet) was crispy, even though I brought home.
