For Collin’s birthday celebration, his family invited us for dinner. The restaurant they chose was Siena.

Siena Restaurant is a casual Italian restaurant, located in South Granville. Only a couple blocks away from Broadway. The restaurant was filled by a lot of people before 8pm when we arrived.

We ordered some appetizers to share, and we each ordered an entree.

Today’s Bruschette
(Red Wine Poached Figs, Caramelized Onion, Aged Balsamic)

Antipasti Selection (for two)
(Prosciutto, Sopressata, Mortadella, Polenta Frites, Roasted Garlic, Beets, Walnuts, Farro Salad, Roasted Squash, Olives, Grilled Focaccia)

Both appy came quickly, which was great. I liked both. I had polenta frites first time, and it was very interesting. I would try them again.

Today’s Salad
(Burrata, Soprasetta, Pear, Shallots, Mixed Greens, Raspberry Vin)

The salad came out way later than the previous appetizers. Both Collin and I like burrata cheese, so we liked this salad.

Now the time for the entree. It took over one hour after the first two appetizers came! We were wondering at some point if the entrees would ever come or not.

Fish of the Day
(Pan seared Arctic Char, Fingerlings, Green Beans, Leek Cream)

Today’s Pasta
(Cavatelli Carbonara, Pancetta, Egg, Chives, Parmesan)

Grilled Flat Iron Steak
(Balsamic-basil marinade, Caramelized Onion, Polenta)

Collin had this dish before, but the ingredients were changed, although the dish name was same. He enjoyed, which was a good thing.

Chorizo and Squid Linguine
(Olive Oil, Garlic, Roasted Pepper Puree)

I and the other family member chose this one. I could tell mine was hot, as I saw the steam coming out of the plate, but hers, however, seemed cold and let the server know. She had to wait for her dish for more time, in addition to one hour of waiting…
It tasted so good, though.

Over previous and this visits, my impression is that their food quality control is inconsistent. When the dish was sent back, the reheated dish tasted good, so they could do better all time.

My friend had contacted me to plan for dinner since last August, but she said she didn’t want to do on weekdays. For weekends, as I had another friend leaving the country for a while and wanted to spend time with her, and also the weather was great even late summer, I was pushing the plan. At the end of October, we finally set a date, and I asked her to choose a place.

The place we went was Tuc Craft Kitchen. It is located in Gastown, close to Army & Navy store. There is a bar section on the first floor in addition to tables, and there are more tables upstairs. Their website says they serve crafted food, using fresh local ingredients. No specific cuisine.

We ordered from their dinner menu.

We both weren’t feeling well to this date, so we ordered virgin cocktail. Hers was tangy, as she asked.

My appy, Roasted Butternut Squash Soup

My appy, Crispy Egg & Bacon

For my stomach, I chose the soup, but I couldn’t help ordering this crispy egg! I offered a half to my friend, as it tasted so good!

Her appy, Parsnip & Smashed Potato Fries
(toasted coriander ketchup)

I had some bite, and it was good. More you eat, greasier it gets. That’s my thought. (It could be because of my upsetting stomach.)

My entree, Faux Lamb Tagine
(Braised Yakima valley Lamb Shoulder, Parsnips, Braised Navy Beans, Water Chestnuts, Dried Cherries, served on Gnocchi Romaine)

It was a rich dish. I wanted to have some kind of refreshment, while eating. Maybe, I should have ordered seasonal vegetables or pickles from their nibbles or bites menu, to accompany with.

Her entree, Clam & Coho Bake
(Manila Clams, Salt Spring Island Mussels, Wild Coho Salmon, Chorizo Sausage, Mini Nugget Potatoes, Roasted Butternut Squash, White Wine Fume)

Their menu has starters, nibbles, bites, and entrees section. You could order a few different things from starters, nibbles and bites, rather than one entree, which might be fun if you go with a group.

My friend and I were at Steveston for the Salmon Festival and got us to cool down at the cafe. After we left the cafe, we went back to the place where we parked her car. By the time we got to the car, it was getting dark and we were talking about dinner. As I’m not familiar with Richmond, she suggested some places and I chose one. However, when we arrived the restaurant, it wasn’t open. So, she was thinking about somewhere else.

We headed to Seto Japanese Restaurant. It is on Alexandra street, located between Garden City Road and No 3 Road. We drove in the area, so I’m not sure about the exact location, but it looks like you can walk from Canada Line Lansdowne station. They serve authenticated Japanese food that their website says.

We ordered from their dinner menu.

Ika Karaage
(Deep-fried Squid, Geso)

It was getting greasy eating at the same time as Tempura, I was happy to have them!

Unagi Roll
(Grilled Eel)

Umeshiso Roll
(Pickled Plum & Shiso)

The combination of pickled Japanese plum and Shiso leaf always helps refreshing our mouths.

Nigiri Sushi (Aji & Uni)

Regular Spider Roll
(Soft Shell Crab Roll)

This tasted good, but by the time when we got this, we were full by the other Sushi and fried food. We should have ordered less at the beginning.

Well, dessert is always for a different stomach, right? :p Once we settled our stomach, we had this Japanese confections.

Cream Mitsumame with Green Tea Ice Cream

Cream Mitsumame with Green Tea Ice Cream at Seto Japanese Restaurant in Richmond

This should be called Anmitsu rather than Mitsumame. “An” for Anmitsu indicates pasted red beans. “Mitsu” is brown sugar syrup. “Ma-me” is beans. Anyways, you can refer to this.

Overall, the food was not bad, although we had heard some rumor that their food wasn’t good.

Note that the pricing seems up since, as far as I saw their website.
