Collin’s birthday was coming up in early November. As he works on weekends, we planned a birthday dinner ahead at the end of October. He didn’t have any preference, so I picked a newer restaurant.

Homer St. Cafe and Bar was open sometime last summer. It is in downtown Vancouver , close to Yaletown area. They serve French cuisine and focus on roasting, especially chicken. Their dinner menu consists snacks, starters, cheese & charcuterie, mains, sides, and desserts. In addition, we were given a today’s special sheet.

We ordered from their regular dinner menu and special.

Ancient Mariner
(Gin, Rosemary infused sweet Vermouth, Cynar, Orange Vermouth, Maple Gastrique)

Complimentary Bread

His choice, Maple Butter Pork Belly

I had some bite, and it was OK. The outside was crispy, but the inside wasn’t cooked enough for me. Collin loved this, though.

My choice, Marinated Scallop and Endive Salad
(Grilled Scallion, Kale Pesto)

As a starter, this was a big salad. I liked every single elements. Within my order, this was the best. Too bad, it is no longer on the menu.

Cheese & Charcuterie 3 items
(Boerenkas, Bresaola, Bleu Claire, served with Seasonal Pickles, Nuts and Fruit)

We chose two kinds of cheese and one kind of meat. We liked them all. Boerenkas cheese was salty. Bresaola meat was like prosciutto, but cured beef. The fruit was served as apple mustard jam.

His choice, Lamb and Potato Pie, Bone Marrow

Because of bone marrow, he ordered this. 😀 He said the pie tasted good, too.

His choice, Side Crispy Chicken Skin

He was too curious and decided to order this side. Yes, it was crispy, but it was smelly and oily to me.

My choice, Marinated Halibut Salad
(Olive Dressing, Tomato, Green Bean, Frisee, Potato)

This was from Roast of the Day on the special menu. I felt the halibut seemed a bit overcooked, but I enjoyed it. I didn’t realize this was a salad until it came to the table, and I ended up having two salads a day.

Double Caesar

He ordered the second drink for his birthday treat.

We were too full to have any dessert here. Overall, the food was fine, but not so special. Maybe, I should have ordered chicken plate. He said he liked their food, though. They open brunch as well, so I want to try that.

And, the restaurant exterior and interior.

Collin worked on a day shift and said that he didn’t want to cook that night. He said he could eat this or that, which usually sounds anything is fine. 😀 As I had a gift card given by my boss and had it for a long time as well as there was one open in a new location, I suggested going to this restaurant.

Cactus Club Cafe’s new location is beside Canada Place. When we got there, the waiting time was almost one hour, and Collin said he can’t wait. 😦

Well, I know there is one on Burrard street, so we went there instead. This location is across from the Burrard Skytrain station.

We ordered from their regular menu.

Signature Caesar

Signature Sangria
(Spanish cocktail, fresh Strawberries and Raspberries, Zinfandel, Apricot brandy, Sprite and a splash of Bellini)

I liked this Sangria. And, so did he! He ordered the large one after he finished his caesar.

Crispy Dry Ribs
(Sea Salt, Cracked Pepper)

I believe it is supposed to be salty, but it was so salty. It tasted good, but I felt guilty to eat, because of my health. One or two was enough for me.

Fajitas with Cajun Chicken
(Black Beans, Salsa Fresca, grilled Cajun Vegetables)

He seemed to enjoy his Fajitas. He ate them all way faster than I finished mine!

Millionaire’s Cut
(7oz chargrilled Filet Mignon, white wine sauteed creole Jumbo Prawns, buttered Mashed Potatoes, seasonal Vegetables)

Oh, this was a huge meal. It totally filled my stomach. It was so good that I couldn’t stop eating.

It is good to have a gift card when you order expensive food, eh? :p

We went back to hotel after walking around downtown Victoria, and I was searching restaurants for dinner. Collin said anything was fine, so I looked at somewhere serves good seafood.

Blue Crab Bar & Grill came up as good reviews. I made a reservation online. The restaurant seems to serve great seafood dishes. It is located in James Bay area, walking along Inner Harbour towards Fisherman’s Wharf.

We ordered from their regular and special menu (fresh sheet).

I thought the clams’ shape was strange. Collin said they were local ones.

I was so happy to eat so many of clams, but at the bottom of the soup bowl, there was a lot of sand sunk and it was getting inedible. We talked to the server and they gave me a small bowl of soup. I thought they just gave me soup but more clams were also in it. 🙂 And, there was no sand. Perfect!
