My birthday is in December, and as it was on his day off, he planned making 10-course birthday dinner for me. While I was working, he went shopping for those ingredients.

The course was served as tapas style first and then two mains and two dessert!

1st course: Smoked Ham, Pear, and Goat Brie Crostini

2nd course: Broccoli Soup with Goat Brie

The last time he made was much better, I mean, this was a bit watery.

3rd course: Swiss Chard Sausage, Yam, Dijon Gravy

This was interesting dish and delicious! I would order again! 😀

4th course: Bruschetta with Arugula & Tomatoes (for two)

5th course: Marinated Eggplant & Salmon

Marinated Eggplant & Salmon

This was my least favorite. I loved the marinated eggplant as usual, but salmon was lukewarm, which he said it was intentional but it was weird to me.

6th course: Lamb Chop, pan-seared Root Vegetables, Swiss Chard, Dijon red wine sauce

The lamb chop was beautifully cooked. We shared it, which is good, because I was getting full at this point.

7th course: Salmon, Crab Mashed Potatoes, and Turnip Hash

The salmon was nicely cooked, too. The crab mash was a bit softer than the one he made before, so that it lost the texture. I really liked the turnip hash.

8th course: Spaghetti Carbonara with Prawns and Scallop

At this point, I was too full. I wished I can share, but he made this full size for himself as well. The taste was good, though.

9th course: Chocolate Panna Cotta

Chocolate Panna Cotta

I was too full to have two dessert, so he arranged this dessert, using both ingredients. Panna Cotta was a little loose, so it was like mousse.

This would be the last birthday dinner cooked by him, as he said he rather buy gifts next time. 🙂

For Collin’s birthday celebration, his family invited us for dinner. The restaurant they chose was Siena.

Siena Restaurant is a casual Italian restaurant, located in South Granville. Only a couple blocks away from Broadway. The restaurant was filled by a lot of people before 8pm when we arrived.

We ordered some appetizers to share, and we each ordered an entree.

Today’s Bruschette
(Red Wine Poached Figs, Caramelized Onion, Aged Balsamic)

Antipasti Selection (for two)
(Prosciutto, Sopressata, Mortadella, Polenta Frites, Roasted Garlic, Beets, Walnuts, Farro Salad, Roasted Squash, Olives, Grilled Focaccia)

Both appy came quickly, which was great. I liked both. I had polenta frites first time, and it was very interesting. I would try them again.

Today’s Salad
(Burrata, Soprasetta, Pear, Shallots, Mixed Greens, Raspberry Vin)

The salad came out way later than the previous appetizers. Both Collin and I like burrata cheese, so we liked this salad.

Now the time for the entree. It took over one hour after the first two appetizers came! We were wondering at some point if the entrees would ever come or not.

Fish of the Day
(Pan seared Arctic Char, Fingerlings, Green Beans, Leek Cream)

Today’s Pasta
(Cavatelli Carbonara, Pancetta, Egg, Chives, Parmesan)

Grilled Flat Iron Steak
(Balsamic-basil marinade, Caramelized Onion, Polenta)

Collin had this dish before, but the ingredients were changed, although the dish name was same. He enjoyed, which was a good thing.

Chorizo and Squid Linguine
(Olive Oil, Garlic, Roasted Pepper Puree)

I and the other family member chose this one. I could tell mine was hot, as I saw the steam coming out of the plate, but hers, however, seemed cold and let the server know. She had to wait for her dish for more time, in addition to one hour of waiting…
It tasted so good, though.

Over previous and this visits, my impression is that their food quality control is inconsistent. When the dish was sent back, the reheated dish tasted good, so they could do better all time.

Collin asked me what I wanted to eat. I asked carbonara! Besides I can’t make pasta right, carbonara is not easy for me to make. Well, many people would ask why. I don’t know. Because it takes long time and has to be precise for timing, maybe?

He said it’s easy! So, I let him make for me. 😀

Spaghetti Carbonara

When I wrote this post, I asked him the dish name. He said carbonara, so I asked him, “what about this egg?”, and he replied it is a part of carbonara. Oh, I didn’t know that! I mean, the recipe I used in the past was mix the york with pasta and sauce before serve. Mm, maybe that’s why my dish failed at that time. 😛
