My friend told me to choose a restaurant for my birthday dinner in December. It is a traditional event with our close friends to get together and have dinner for each of birthday now. I didn’t have any particular restaurants in my mind, so I started to search for an interesting place. One of us can’t eat seafood that sometimes makes me difficult to select a place. I chose a few and asked her to choose one.

We chose The Oakwood Canadian Bistro. It is in Kitsilano, close to Macdonald and 4th Avenue. They serve Canadian comfort food. I didn’t realize until we arrived there and saw the menu that their menu was meant for sharing. Oh, no!

Anyways, we discussed and managed what to order.

The boys ordered one meal each, as one can’t eat seafood and it was difficult to share, and Collin was sick a bit so that he refused to share.

House Tagliatelle
(Zucchini, Spinach, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Parmigiano)

Burger
(Smoked Cheddar, Relish, Buttermilk Onions, Alfalfa Sprouts)

The girls shared these four dishes. The boys had some bites after all. 🙂

Warm Kale Salad
(Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Buttermilk Onions)

Oh, we loved this salad. I would repeat this. The plate was bigger than I thought.

Fried Octopus
(Bacon Aioli, Pickled Shallots, Komatsuna)

This was good, too. The octopus was tender. Komatsuna is a Japanese mustard spinach.

Frying Porks
(Maple Mustard)

This was meatballs on the skewer. We liked them, especially boys wanted to order one more.

Halibut Cheeks
(Bacon Lardon, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Lentils, Kale, Crackling)

Personally, I liked this dish. Well, halibut cheeks are a precious part of the fish to eat, and it always tasted good. It was a perfect balance with all ingredients.

Overall, the food was pretty good. The server had no smile at all, until he served my birthday cake. For my birthday, my friend made it for me! It was so nice of her. This is one of my favorite, raw cheesecake (non-baked). She secretly asked Collin what kind of cheesecake I liked, and he requested the raw. 🙂

Since Collin’s mom was here, we planned to get together including his grandma. They picked us up at Lougheed Skytrain station and headed to the nearest restaurant that they were familiar with.

White Spot is a Canadian chain restaurant, which locations are various in BC and Alberta. They serve variety of food, salad, burger, Italian, Canadian food, etc. And, I found milkshake on the menu! I shouted at Collin about it, because I was so excited. 😉

We ordered from their burger menu. I took pictures of only my order.

The Legendary Burger with Sweet Potato Fries
(Traditional 1/4 lb. beef burger with their signature Triple “O” sauce, and lettuce & tomato)

The burger was good. I think the quality is high as a chain restaurant.

As I shouted about the milkshake, Collin’s mom suggested sharing with his grandma. His grandma didn’t want any, so I asked the server for half size. (I’m not sure if it was OK, but she brought a glass.)

Chocolate Milkshake

Oh, I was so happy about this. 🙂 I loved the one at McDonald’s in Japan, but when I tried here in Canada, I didn’t like. Now I can have one anytime at White Spot!

The first Sunday of May was so sunny and warm! I was gonna just go shopping and headed to Metrotown on foot, but it was so nice to be outside, so I sent a text to my friend if she wanted to walk in the evening. After I did some shopping in the mall, I met up with her and went to Burnaby Lake for walking. We walked for about 2 hours or so and decided to have dinner.

The area doesn’t really have any restaurants, besides, it was Sunday, so we drove toward Vancouver and went in White Spot. I didn’t realize this location was across the Gilmore Skytrain station, until we left there and my friend took me home. They serve variety of food, salad, burger, Italian, Canadian food, i.e. Poutine, and so on.

We ordered from their lunch & dinner menu to share.

Sweet Potato Fries
(Cajun seasoned & served with Chipotle Mayo)

People here say sweet potato and yam are same. They’re not! 😀 Well, this one is yam fries. I liked the crunchiness of the fries’ surface.

Wild Pacific Salmon Fillet Burger
(Lettuce, tomato, red onion & our lemon basil aioli, served with Caesar salad)

I’ve heard from my other friend that salmon burger tastes good. It does! I mean, I didn’t expect the tastiness at this kind of chain restaurant.

The Spot’s Salad your way
(Chargrilled Chicken with the Spot’s salad includes artisan greens, Amorosa tomato basil salsa, cranberries, sunflower & pumpkin seeds with honey sherry dressing, served with garlic panini bread)

The salad was OK. My friend didn’t like the chicken, which was too dry.

This restaurant is in various locations, so I will go back if I’m hungry.
