I was invited to my friend’s birthday dinner. While organizing the dinner, her friends talked about gifts in Facebook event page, and we decided to bring a birthday cake as a part of it. Her husband requested some light dessert, so I suggested Pavlova. Pavlova is a meringue dessert.

The idea was agreed. Pavlova from Sweet Carrie’s Dessert Shop in North Vancouver is quite famous. It is a bakery store in Lonsdale Quay Market and sells other bakery stuff as well. When my office was close to Lonsdale Quay, we used to buy this Pavlova for staff’s birthday.

The guy on the phone, who has Asian accent was a funny person due to the listening skill between him and me. I enjoyed the conversation with him pretty much. 🙂

For Collin’s birthday, we had a dinner with our close friends. Before the day, one of friends asked me where she can get birthday cake this time. I hadn’t been following news for new cafe or restaurant for a while, so I searched if there is anything new and if not, where the place I hadn’t tried.

And, Thomas Haas Chocolates & Patisserie came up. I have heard about this place many many times, but I just didn’t have a chance to try, because their locations are not close to where I usually go.

She chose 5 pieces of individual cake at the Kitsilano location.

Almond Mascarpone
(Light Mascarpone Cream, Soft Almond Sponge Cake with Amaretto and Espresso)

It sounded like Tiramisu, but it wasn’t. It was more like a sponge cake with coffee taste, as it’s described.

Pistachio Apricot Cake
(Pistachio and White Chocolate Mousse, Fresh Apricot, Vanilla Shortbread)

By looking at the color, I thought match taste. No, no, it was pistachio.

Caramel Brownie Cake
(Flourless Chocolate Pecan Brownie, Caramel Cremeux, Caramel Bavarian)

The was gluten free. I don’t mind flourless at all.

Hazelnut Praline
(Hazelnut Mousseline, Hazelnut Dacquoise, Vanilla Sponge Cale, Jamaican Run Syrup, Shortbread Crust)

We shared each one of them, so I can’t remember much how the taste was. Haha. I didn’t have any disliking feeling, so they must be all good. Next time, I would like to enjoy one by myself.

We had a birthday dinner party at our friend’s house. As I wrote yesterday, there were a lot of food for dinner. But, something is missing, right? Yeah, birthday cake!

As her place was in Burnaby, I asked the other friend to pick up some cake from the store in Burnaby. It is Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie. I have never been there, but my friend confirmed if they have individual cake, before heading there, and yes, they have. For whole cake, you need to order in advance, according to her.
