For Collin’s birthday celebration, his family invited us for dinner. The restaurant they chose was Siena.

Siena Restaurant is a casual Italian restaurant, located in South Granville. Only a couple blocks away from Broadway. The restaurant was filled by a lot of people before 8pm when we arrived.

We ordered some appetizers to share, and we each ordered an entree.

(Red Wine Poached Figs, Caramelized Onion, Aged Balsamic)

Antipasti Selection (for two)
(Prosciutto, Sopressata, Mortadella, Polenta Frites, Roasted Garlic, Beets, Walnuts, Farro Salad, Roasted Squash, Olives, Grilled Focaccia)

Both appy came quickly, which was great. I liked both. I had polenta frites first time, and it was very interesting. I would try them again.

Today’s Salad
(Burrata, Soprasetta, Pear, Shallots, Mixed Greens, Raspberry Vin)

The salad came out way later than the previous appetizers. Both Collin and I like burrata cheese, so we liked this salad.

Now the time for the entree. It took over one hour after the first two appetizers came! We were wondering at some point if the entrees would ever come or not.

Fish of the Day
(Pan seared Arctic Char, Fingerlings, Green Beans, Leek Cream)

Today’s Pasta
(Cavatelli Carbonara, Pancetta, Egg, Chives, Parmesan)

Grilled Flat Iron Steak
(Balsamic-basil marinade, Caramelized Onion, Polenta)

Collin had this dish before, but the ingredients were changed, although the dish name was same. He enjoyed, which was a good thing.

Chorizo and Squid Linguine
(Olive Oil, Garlic, Roasted Pepper Puree)

I and the other family member chose this one. I could tell mine was hot, as I saw the steam coming out of the plate, but hers, however, seemed cold and let the server know. She had to wait for her dish for more time, in addition to one hour of waiting…
It tasted so good, though.

Over previous and this visits, my impression is that their food quality control is inconsistent. When the dish was sent back, the reheated dish tasted good, so they could do better all time.

One weekday in April, my friend sent me a text, asking if we can go out for dinner. I was busy with work and had lunch around 3, but I replied I can. Well, she was also busy and would leave her work after 7, so it was perfect. When she was off the work, we searched for where we would go. As she said she wanted to eat good tasty food, I picked this interesting place, although it would cost a little more than casual dinner.

My choice was Kitsilano Daily Kitchen. They are just around the corner of Burrard Bridge and serve French west coast cuisine, changing the menu daily. I say it would be difficult to plan ahead if you are a picky eater. Well, that was the reason I hadn’t been there. :p

We ordered from the daily menu. We shared appy and each ordered an entree.

Complimentary Potato Bread, Saint Agur Blue Cheese, Olives

This potato bread was slightly sweet, but as blue cheese was salty, it was a great combination. And, I have to note that this blue cheese was amazingly tasty! We asked the name of cheese, because we wanted to get some from store.

Steamed Salt Spring Island Mussels & Clams
(Champagne Cream, Thyme, Desert Smoked Bacon)

Windset Farms Heirloom Gem Tomatoes
(Island Buffalo Mozzarella, Basil, Espelette Vinaigrette)

Both appy tasted good. For the juice in the mussels and clams, we wanted to have bread to soak. 🙂

Her choice, Rare-seared Breast of Mt. Lehman Duckling
(Northern White Bean Cassoulet, Grapefruit Gastrique)

My choice, Brown Butter Broiled Arctic Char
(Vanilla Scented Wild Rice, Serrano Aioli, Charred Corn Salsa)

Seared duckling breast was so tender and tasted great. My Arctic char was huge and was cooked perfectly. The salsa was a kick with some spiciness to eat with char.

After dinner, the server came to see if we wanted to have dessert. He explained verbally, so I don’t have any details, but they had chocolate ganache with goat cheese and lemon tart. We were full yet ordered one.

Lemon Tart

Americano

The lemon tart was quite sour to me, but I kept eating after a while. That’s a chef’s magic!

Although we can’t come back for the same dish, I would like to try another time again.

When I checked all restaurants for Dine Out Vancouver, this restaurant was my first to check. Collin and I wanted to go there for long time, but they open only dinner time, which is difficult for him to arrange the time, and also I didn’t like their Dine Out menu last year so that we had missed opportunities. In spite of the fact that I was checking it right after the menu was revealed, the restaurant was almost fully booked! I manged to make a reservation for 9:15pm.

Chambar is a sister restaurant of Medina Cafe located to the next door. It is in a walking distance from Stadium Skytrain station. They serve Belgian food. I don’t know what Belgian food is at all other than waffle, so this 3-course dinner for $38 was great opportunity.

Bajan Tea
(Goslings spiced rum, Takara Japanese plum wine, iced tea & orgeat)

I sipped and really liked it. So did Collin. I would order this next time for myself.

His appy, Salade D’Hiver
(Winter Root Vegetable Salad, Belgian Endive, Apple Cider Emulsion, Chervil, Roasted Walnut Vinaigrette)

My appy, Carpaccio de Thon Rouge
(Yellow Fin Tuna Carpaccio, Mint & Cilantro Pistou, Lime & Chili Mayo, Jalapeno Dressing, Grated Grano Padano)

His entree, La Piece de Boeuf au Bleu
(Char Grilled 10 oz reserve Angus New York Steak, Celeriac Puree, Black Kale Chips, Roquefort Butter, Balsamic & Shallot Jam)

My entree, L’Omble de L’Arctique
(Pan Seared Arctic Char, Saffron & Lemongrass Risotto, Peashoot & Pickled Vegetable Salad)

His dessert, Parfait au Citron

My dessert, Pate au Chocolat
(Dark Chocolate Pate, Sour Cherries, Coconut Sorbet)

Oh, I really liked all my choices! And, this chocolate pate was the best ever! It is on their regular dessert menu, so you must try.
