Archive for the ‘West End (Robson)’ Category

My friend and I went for walking on the first day of the Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend. We walked on the trails in the Stanley Park, stopping by at the cafe. After we left the cafe, we kept on walking to the West End. On the way, we planned to have dinner somewhere, meeting up with her boyfriend.

Ap Gu Jung was where we chose. It is a Korean restaurant, and we had been there but loooong time ago. (5 years ago, as I just checked!) Their atmosphere has changed, and so has their menu! The atmosphere is more modern Izakaya style rather than authentic, and the menu is more narrowed down and provides small plates but easy to choose, especially for single person, rather than big family style of plates. I feel most Korean restaurants serve big plates and find difficult to collect friends to go, so this is a good news.

We ordered each plate. My friend and I also ordered one rice on side to share.

I like Korean Banchan set serving with the order. They also fill up if we eat them all. This is refreshing while we eat.

My friend went for seafood, and I chose beef. (Look same! :D) I’m glad to choose this over non-spicy food. When I asked the server, he recommended this, and when I asked which was better, seafood or beef, he said beef. I made him guarantee the taste before I made up my mind. 😛 The spicy level was 3, but it was really spicy in MY spicy level, but so good. The server was relieved when I said this was so good! 🙂

It was nice to have spicy food when it was chilly outside. This picture was taken along Lost Lagoon, on the way to the restaurant.

On a weekend after a craziest month went by, I went to Shiatsu in downtown Vancouver. As I had an appointment for a bank before that, I hadn’t eaten lunch yet. My Shiatsu therapist asked what I was doing after, and I told him that I was going to have lunch. Then he said there was a new restaurant soft opening in West End, so we headed there.

SPAGHeTEI is an authentic Japanese style spaghetti restaurant where has been open in northern Japan since 1975. They serve spaghetti with various sauce that Japanese people are familiar with. Because it was during soft opening, we got 30% off! There was a note on the sandwich board, saying cash only, which I don’t know if it is applied even now.

We ordered from their regular menu.

Both complimentary bread and soup was good. I wanted another cup of soup. 😛

Meat Sauce
(Minced Beef & Vegetables topped with a Japanese Bolognese Sauce, sprinkled with grated Cheddar Cheese)

I tasted some from his. This meat sauce tasted different from what I have eaten. Theirs was more like demiglace base. Under the sauce, there was boiled shredded cabbage that was refreshing, in contrast with the rich sauce.

White Sauce
(Shrimp, Bacon & Spinach with their signature White Sauce with their specially blended spice mix, rich and creamy)

As it is described, the sauce was creamy, but it wasn’t so rich. It was just right for me. There was some red and green peppers in the sauce, which wasn’t written in the menu and was giving stronger taste than spinach. I don’t even remember if I tasted spinach. Haha.

And, extra picture for the sandwich board outside.

Although it was drizzling, my friend said she still wanted to go hiking. On the previous day, it rained so much, so I chose Stanley Park to go for walk. We planned to have lunch on the way to the park. As I had never been to this restaurant, we decided to go there.

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka seems so popular that there is a long line up every single time when I pass by. This time was no exception, but luckily, there were only a few people before us.

There are a few Ramen restaurants in Vancouver, and each has each concept and specialty.  Their specialty is white Tonkotsu soup, I guess. Noodles are thin and straight. You can choose the quantity of noodles, and pricing will be adjusted by $1.00 less or more.

My friend’s choice, Kara Miso Ramen
(Pork Broth seasoned with Hot Sauce and Miso)

She said that it wasn’t spicy to her. Maybe, Tonkotsu soup is mild enough to mix hot sauce?

My choice, Grilled Salmon Bowl Combo with Small Shio Ramen
(Pork Broth seasoned with Salt)

It was two months ago, and I don’t remember its taste well. It means it probably wasn’t so special to me. Next time, I want to try Miso Ramen.
