For Collin’s birthday celebration, his family invited us for dinner. The restaurant they chose was Siena.

Siena Restaurant is a casual Italian restaurant, located in South Granville. Only a couple blocks away from Broadway. The restaurant was filled by a lot of people before 8pm when we arrived.

We ordered some appetizers to share, and we each ordered an entree.

Today’s Bruschette
(Red Wine Poached Figs, Caramelized Onion, Aged Balsamic)

Antipasti Selection (for two)
(Prosciutto, Sopressata, Mortadella, Polenta Frites, Roasted Garlic, Beets, Walnuts, Farro Salad, Roasted Squash, Olives, Grilled Focaccia)

Both appy came quickly, which was great. I liked both. I had polenta frites first time, and it was very interesting. I would try them again.

Today’s Salad
(Burrata, Soprasetta, Pear, Shallots, Mixed Greens, Raspberry Vin)

The salad came out way later than the previous appetizers. Both Collin and I like burrata cheese, so we liked this salad.

Now the time for the entree. It took over one hour after the first two appetizers came! We were wondering at some point if the entrees would ever come or not.

Fish of the Day
(Pan seared Arctic Char, Fingerlings, Green Beans, Leek Cream)

Today’s Pasta
(Cavatelli Carbonara, Pancetta, Egg, Chives, Parmesan)

Grilled Flat Iron Steak
(Balsamic-basil marinade, Caramelized Onion, Polenta)

Collin had this dish before, but the ingredients were changed, although the dish name was same. He enjoyed, which was a good thing.

Chorizo and Squid Linguine
(Olive Oil, Garlic, Roasted Pepper Puree)

I and the other family member chose this one. I could tell mine was hot, as I saw the steam coming out of the plate, but hers, however, seemed cold and let the server know. She had to wait for her dish for more time, in addition to one hour of waiting…
It tasted so good, though.

Over previous and this visits, my impression is that their food quality control is inconsistent. When the dish was sent back, the reheated dish tasted good, so they could do better all time.

There was a day in September that I would like to celebrate for myself. It has been a certain number of years since I moved in Canada, which I couldn’t believe how fast the time passed, and I felt I was deserved to treat myself well.

I asked Collin to come with me for dinner. For this special occasion, I chose West Restaurant. They are located at South Granville, a couple blocks away from Broadway. They serve contemporary regional cuisine. (It seems to mean modern and local, according to Collin.)

They have three kinds of tasting menu (7 courses); Sea Tasting, Land Tasting, and Vegetarian Tasting, and Collin chose Lane and I chose Sea.

I don’t remember what kind of bread they were. There were 3 kinds.

Beldi

First dish, Amuse Bouche

I believe it was smoked salmon with pickled Daikon or celeriac. It was refreshment to start with. I should have taken a picture using flashlight…

Second dish for Land, Beef Tartar
(Sweet Onion and Soy, Sesame, Shallot)

You see the pink one at the bottom. That was tartar.

Second dish for Sea, Wild BC Salmon
(Spice Cured, Baby Dill, Cucumbers)

You see the thin sliced orange one at the bottom. That was salmon.

I liked both first dishes. For salmon, I wish there was more salmon. :p Both of them are still on the current menu, so we can order next time.

Third dish for Land, Twice Cooked Foie Gras
(Toasted Agassiz Hazelnuts, Green Strawberries, Brioche)

Third dish for Sea, Albacore Tuna
(Octopus Chorizo, Black Olives, EVOO)

This octopus Chorizo was remarkable to us. The Tuna was nothing special.

Fourth dish for Land, Thiessen Farm Quail
(Espelette Glazed, Potato and Herb Rosti, Chevre)

This was beautifully plated. Not only that, Collin admired how well the quail was cooked. He said it was perfect.

Fourth dish for Sea, Diver Caught Scallop
(Snap Peas, Carrots, Sauce Vierge)

This was also beautifully plated. The scallop was cooked perfectly as well. I wanted to eat another one!

Fifth dish for Land, Yarrow Meadows Duck
(Confit Leg, Chanterelles, Corn, Plum Compote)

Duck was fine, but the sauce was rich and we felt it was a bit too much. The corn helped for the refreshment.

Fifth dish for Sea, Line Caught Ling Cod
(Gailan, Shimeji Mushrooms, Ponzu)

The skin on the ling cod was crispy. I wanted to have little bit of punch on seasoning.

Sixth dish, Pre Dessert

I think this was berry sorbet with peach compote. It was a great refreshment after eating three dishes.

Seventh dish for Land, Strawberry Lemon Cream Tart
(Fresh Strawberries, Mint Frozen Yogurt)

This was a good dessert. We both liked, especially the mint frozen yogurt.

Seventh dish for Sea, Spiced Squash Cheesecake
(Banana, Ganache, Orange Squash Sobert)

For the Sea Tasting, this dessert was the most heavy dish. ūüėÄ I was wondering how squash works in dessert, but it was good.

Petit Four
(Chocolate Truffles)

While I went to washroom, this was served, and Collin had his share already before I came back.

And, an extra picture of the restaurant interior.

Overall, we both thought the Land tasting menu was better and worth trying than the Sea. The meat plates were so filling and you can bite repeatedly and taste well, whereas the seafood plates were small portions so that the ordinary person like me can’t remember what the detail taste was or even if it was something special, just having two bites. Maybe, I’m not high standard to try these restaurants yet. ūüėÄ

We usually have a dine-out for dinner, when one of our close¬†friends’ birthday comes up. In September, there are two of our friends, whose birthday was coming up. However, one of them is a newly mom. I asked her if she can come out, asking her parents to watch her baby or taking her baby to a restaurant, or if it would be better to have a party at her place so that she can watch her baby. Her preference was the latter.

So, I budgeted with another friend and chose restaurants and menu. As the date was set on a weekday, I asked Collin to pick up everything. (Well, he agreed!) Here are where he went: Whole Foods, Shanghai Xiao¬†Long Bao, Mogu, and Banana Leaf Malaysian Cuisine. Choosing dishes was the tough part, because another birthday friend doesn’t eat seafood and it had to be within a budget, unlike we pay whatever at a restaurant.

Tada~! This is all food.

Collin shucked the oysters at the birthday girl’s place. He prepared mignonette at our house, before he went shopping. Everybody (except the birthday boy) enjoyed the oysters with the mignonette.

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao Restaurant is on Richards street and a couple of blocks away from Waterfront station. Collin and I liked their Xiao Long Bao last time, so I included it in the order. Also Kung Pao chicken, which is diced Chicken with peanut in spicy sauce. In addition, I asked Collin to get some veggies. We all enjoyed their food.

As the birthday girl had told me that she wanted to eat their food again and the birthday boy likes Karaage, I put it in the list. I sent an email to them in advance and asked where to catch them and the closing time for that day.

Roti Canai and Satay

Hot Sour Soup, Mee Goreng and Nasi Goreng

There¬†are no specific reasons¬†why I chose this restaurant. The birthday girl requested no Japanese food, and the birthday boy likes Chinese food except seafood, and¬†I just wanted to choose something that both birthday friends would love but that we can take out.¬†I remembered the girls wanted to order hot sour soup when we had a birthday dinner in a Thai restaurant for one of us, but we didn’t order and it could be nice to have some this time. Since Collin picked up the oysters at Whole Foods, he ordered from the restaurant on Broadway.

Here was a predicted incident happened! I had given him¬†a list of all orders, and when he¬†came back from some of the pick-ups,¬†he said he had lost the¬†paper. I¬†had written some notes precisely for this restaurant, as I knew he would need to confirm.¬†Since¬†I was working, I told him what to order¬†orally instead of re-writing. When he came back again and I checked the receipt, the satay was ordered¬†for 4 skewers with one¬†each kind! Oh no! What I wanted to ordered was 4 skewers per each kind! Well, at the end of the day, there were enough food on the table, although we couldn’t taste each kind of satay.

And, there was another mistake, which was my fault! I thought the birthday boy can eat shrimp, but apparently he doesn’t eat! He is not allergic, but he just doesn’t. Sorry to him.
