We usually have a dine-out for dinner, when one of our close friends’ birthday comes up. In September, there are two of our friends, whose birthday was coming up. However, one of them is a newly mom. I asked her if she can come out, asking her parents to watch her baby or taking her baby to a restaurant, or if it would be better to have a party at her place so that she can watch her baby. Her preference was the latter.

So, I budgeted with another friend and chose restaurants and menu. As the date was set on a weekday, I asked Collin to pick up everything. (Well, he agreed!) Here are where he went: Whole Foods, Shanghai Xiao Long Bao, Mogu, and Banana Leaf Malaysian Cuisine. Choosing dishes was the tough part, because another birthday friend doesn’t eat seafood and it had to be within a budget, unlike we pay whatever at a restaurant.

Tada~! This is all food.

Collin shucked the oysters at the birthday girl’s place. He prepared mignonette at our house, before he went shopping. Everybody (except the birthday boy) enjoyed the oysters with the mignonette.

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao Restaurant is on Richards street and a couple of blocks away from Waterfront station. Collin and I liked their Xiao Long Bao last time, so I included it in the order. Also Kung Pao chicken, which is diced Chicken with peanut in spicy sauce. In addition, I asked Collin to get some veggies. We all enjoyed their food.

As the birthday girl had told me that she wanted to eat their food again and the birthday boy likes Karaage, I put it in the list. I sent an email to them in advance and asked where to catch them and the closing time for that day.

Hot Sour Soup, Mee Goreng and Nasi Goreng

There are no specific reasons why I chose this restaurant. The birthday girl requested no Japanese food, and the birthday boy likes Chinese food except seafood, and I just wanted to choose something that both birthday friends would love but that we can take out. I remembered the girls wanted to order hot sour soup when we had a birthday dinner in a Thai restaurant for one of us, but we didn’t order and it could be nice to have some this time. Since Collin picked up the oysters at Whole Foods, he ordered from the restaurant on Broadway.

Here was a predicted incident happened! I had given him a list of all orders, and when he came back from some of the pick-ups, he said he had lost the paper. I had written some notes precisely for this restaurant, as I knew he would need to confirm. Since I was working, I told him what to order orally instead of re-writing. When he came back again and I checked the receipt, the satay was ordered for 4 skewers with one each kind! Oh no! What I wanted to ordered was 4 skewers per each kind! Well, at the end of the day, there were enough food on the table, although we couldn’t taste each kind of satay.

And, there was another mistake, which was my fault! I thought the birthday boy can eat shrimp, but apparently he doesn’t eat! He is not allergic, but he just doesn’t. Sorry to him.

After my friend and I went hiking near UBC, we took a public bus and decided to go for dinner somewhere. Each time we got an idea of where to go, the street nearby the restaurant that we were supposed to get off was passed by. 😦 So, we got off the bus at Cambie and took Canada Line, and we quickly talked about where to go.

As this place was in my list for a while, we decided to go there. Shaolin Noodle House is on Broadway in Vancouver, a couple blocks away from Broadway-City hall station. This place was introduced in Klip magazine that they serve dragging noodles (dragging by hand at the store).

We ordered from their regular menu.

I had pictured somewhat the dragging noodles in soup as Ramen, so when I first tasted, it was strange. 😀 More I ate, I realized they were like Udon noodles. Still, I’m not sure if I order the same one next time. I may try fried one.

Dumplings were unexpected, too. Again, in my mind, this fried dumplings were like Gyoza. When this dish came, we both were surprised by the size. Each one was triple size of Gyoza that we know. And, when I ate, I learned the dumpling skin was not like Gyoza’s. It was like steamed bun’s. So, of course, we couldn’t eat even half pieces. Haha. I ended up taking the rest home.

One of my co-workers notified me that there was an event of Burton BC Sample Sale back in September. Collin and I went there to see if we can get something cheaper or what we needed. After going this event, we were looking for a place to eat. There was a noodle place where we wanted to go, but we found out it wasn’t so close from Broadway at Cambie.

While we were walking on Broadway east and west, I remembered that there was a cafe on Cambie, which I found on the way back home from a restaurant before. The cafe is Moii Cafe where serves crepe and tea. I don’t think they have coffee, though.

We ordered from their savory and sweet crepe menu.

Their crepe wasn’t so bad. I would come back to try the other ones. 🙂
