Just before the Christmas time last year, I got contacted by my friend whom I went to the same school with. I hadn’t seen her for a year, so yes, I was definitely looking forward seeing her. She also invited our common friend. I didn’t even remember when was the last time I saw the friend.

We got together at a cafe in downtown Vancouver first, because one other friend joined us. After he left, three of us decided to have dinner. As my friend needed to go to Metrotown for errands, we headed to Burnaby. The shopping at mall in the Christmas time was crazy, but finding a parking spot was crazier! Anyways, by the time when we finished the errands, it was getting late. We didn’t know where to go for dinner, so I took them to Pearl House, a Taiwanese restaurant.

We ordered from their menu to share. My friends didn’t know what to order except beef noodles, so I suggested the dishes from my previous visit. Unfortunately, beef sirloin was sold out…

Instead of beef sirloin, we took advice from the server and ordered beef tendon one. Well, none of us liked the tendon. Nothing wrong. We were just not familiar with the texture. It was probably my first try, and now I know I wouldn’t order the tendon next time anywhere. 😀

This was my other friends’ recommendation in my previous visit, Dong-an Ji (stir-fried chicken). It is spicy, but it tastes so good.

When I told my friends there was Mapo Tofu, they responded right away that they wanted to eat! 😀 And, I’m glad they liked it.

If I go to the restaurant again, I want to order something else. Any suggestions?

My friends and I were at a Taiwanese restaurant for our last dinner together until one year later. We were checking out their dessert menu, but we left the restaurant without having any dessert, as some of us already had milk tea and also we couldn’t find what we wanted to order.

On the way home, one friend said to go somewhere for dessert. We don’t have much information around the area, so we decided to go to Cactus Club Cafe near Metrotown. The restaurant is on Kingsway and open till late.

We each ordered some dessert or drink.

The Perfect Double Cuervo Margarita
(Fresh hand-squeezed Lime Juice, Cuervo tequila and triple sec, shaken with Egg Whites)

Apple Galette
(Flaky puff pastry, Caramelized Apples, Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream, Caramel Sauce)

Chocolate Lava Cake
(Molten dark Chocolate Cake, Raspberry Coulis, Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream)

I knew the galette would be big, so I chose the lava cake. I liked it, although I found it sweet. The sourness of raspberry coulis was helpful for that.

At the end of September, my friend asked me if we had some spare time to have dinner with our common friend, who was leaving here for a year, and we set a date. The restaurant was chosen by the common friend.

She chose Pearl House in Burnaby. It is a Taiwanese restaurant, and she said she really liked their food. I wasn’t sure where it was exactly, but when I checked on map, they are closed to Nikkei Cultural Centre, where Sushi class, Mochi pounding, or Craft & Bake Fair is held.

We ordered from their menu to share by four.

Tofu & Minced Pork in Spicy Sauce on Rice

It is called Mapo Tofu in Chinese or Mabo Dofu in Japanese. There is a same dish without rice on the different section of the menu. This one is cheaper and enough to share. It was spicy for me but I was able to eat and liked it.

Deep Fried Chicken Nugget

It says nugget, but it looked like Karaage. I liked them as well.

Shredded Chicken with Green Onion & Ginger Sauce

This was my friends’ recommendation. It is called Dong-an Ji (stir-fried chicken). It was spicy, I mean, more you eat, spicier you get! But you can’t stop eating. 😀

Beef Sirloin in Soup with Noodle

My friend said the thick noodles were good with it. You have to pay extra $0.50 for the substitute, but it worth it. The beef sirloin was so tender.

Vegetarian Fried Rice

This was my least favorite among the orders. It was interesting to try vegetarian dishes. There was vegetarian sausage (?) in it.

My friends ordered milk teas, but I didn’t take pictures of them. Anyways, the food was enough for four people, and I even took some leftover home.
